What Is Pediatric Private Duty Nursing?
Pediatric Private Duty Nursing, often called pediatric PDN, is one-on-one skilled nursing care for children with complex medical needs.
Care is provided by a licensed RN or LPN at home or in the community based on physician orders, clinical documentation, payer requirements, authorization, and the child’s plan of care.
Pediatric PDN may support children who need:
- Tracheostomy care
- Ventilator support
- Feeding tube support
- Seizure precautions
- Medication administration
- Respiratory monitoring
- Post-NICU or post-hospital support
- Care documentation and family communication
You Are Not Just Tired. You Are Carrying a Care System.
Many parents arrive here after months or years of doing everything themselves.
You may be waking up to alarms, tracking feed rates, remembering medication schedules, watching breathing patterns, learning equipment, calling specialists, and trying to keep the rest of the family moving too.
At Dynamiks Home Care, we understand that pediatric nursing is not only clinical. It is deeply personal. Families need a care team that listens, communicates clearly, and understands how much trust it takes to welcome someone into the home.
PDN vs HHA Section
Private Duty Nurse or Home Health Aide?
Most families need clarity before they need a decision. A pediatric private duty nurse and a home health aide are not the same, but both may support children at home depending on the care plan.
Private Duty Nurse (PDN)
The RN or LPN doing skilled care
Tracheostomy and ventilator management
Medication administration (IV, oral, injection, rescue meds)
Feeding pump operation and tube site care
Seizure response and rescue medication
Wound care and dressing changes
Vital signs and clinical assessment
Care plan execution and medical-record charting
For your child if their care needs nursing-level skill more than a few times a day or night.
Home Health Aide (HHA)
The trained aide handling daily living
Bathing, dressing, hygiene
Feeding (oral, not tube)
Mobility, transfers, repositioning
Toileting and incontinence care
Companionship and play
Light meal prep
Household tasks tied to your child's care
For your child's day-to-day routines, alongside or instead of a nurse.
Hours and coverage
How Pediatric Private Duty Nursing Hours Are Determined
Pediatric Private Duty Nursing hours are based on the child’s medical needs, physician orders, clinical documentation, payer requirements, staffing availability, and authorization. Some children may need partial-day support, overnight support, or longer nursing coverage, but approved hours vary by child and are not guaranteed until reviewed and authorized.
Possible Partial-Day
Nursing Support
Children with significant ongoing medical needs, such as feeding tubes, seizure disorders, tracheostomy care, or respiratory support, may be evaluated for partial-day nursing support based on physician orders, documentation, payer review, and the approved care plan.
Possible Extended or
Overnight Nursing Support
Children with more complex care needs, such as ventilator dependence or higher-acuity medical needs, may be evaluated for extended, overnight, or around-the-clock nursing support when medically necessary and authorized.
Ongoing Review and
Authorization
Approved services may need periodic review, updated documentation, physician orders, and payer authorization as the child’s condition, care needs, and plan of care change.
